Can I Get Your Digits?

Digits are a dark, minimalist synth pop project from Toronto, Ontario. Created as a one piece unit by Alt Altman, Digits began in late 2009 with the release of his first album Hold it Close.

He released the Lost Dream EP in April 2011, with the yet to be released, Only Affection EP to follow in September, and a second full-length, Get Through, scheduled for November.

Only Affection EP, when it is released will be done so as a free download on his website on September 6, 2011, with the first single "Because It's Wrong."

Broody and slightly spooky, "Because It's Wrong," will stalk you as it hypnotizes you with it's gorgeous minimalism. If this tune is any indication of what the EP is going to be like...we might all need to see someone come September.

Digits Calculates His Return

Alt Altman is Digits, an electronic indie pop artist from Toronto, and it's been a while since Hold It Close but Altman has emerged out of the studio with new music.

A blend of indie pop songwriting and danceable electronic arrangements, Digits has been likened to the Junior Boys, Belle & Sebastian, and Broadcast. Although to me the record reminds me of early 90's Creation/Factory/Sarah records with an electronic edge, think Pacific, The Wake, etc. Altman writes lush, detached stuff that's kind of sparse the way so many of those early 90's records were and that's why I love this record. His new stuff continues that tradition as it tugs at your heartstrings.

For a first glimpse, "Lost Dream," holds a lot of detached/aloof promise of what is to come. I for one can't wait to hear what Digits calculates next.

Hold It Close is a brooding record, with lyrical themes such as obsessive love, anxiety, and existential meaninglessness. Feel good album of the fall? Maybe not. Don't fret, it is not without a sense of humour though. The tongue-in-cheek "You're Going To Age" is a straight up disco song about the inevitability of growing old, while "Saturation" is about being overwhelmed by the availability of too much music. Uh...no comment on that one.
