The Black Hollies Head Softly Towards The Light

Today, Ernest Jenning Record Co. proudly releases Softly Towards The Light, the third full-length album from New Jersey quartet The Black Hollies. To celebrate the group have planned a record release party at Glasslands in Brooklyn, NY on 10/10, and are offering up a free download of the song "Gloomy Monday Morning". After an appearance at CMJ 2009, The Black Hollies hit the road in November for an East Coast tour with Brian Scary & The Shredding Tears.

As for "Gloomy Monday Morning," it's an energetic 60's influenced pop stomp. It's as if the 60's were 90's were 00's and that's a good thing. Raw and catchier than the swine flu, this track is a brilliant preview of their full-length.

Though the band have always been known as a power-house live act, Softly Towards The Light is a distinct step forward for them as song writers and recording artists and "Gloomy Monday Morning," is pretty much proof of that.

This Week (May 15th) at POP! at Eclipse

This weeks featured live performance is from a band that remains a mystery; Slowcode. Little is known about them except that they dwell in a server room somewhere in the heart of Jacksonville creating music that doesn't pay tribute to the PC at all. Imagine Office Space with guitars instead of hammers and amps instead of fax machines. All this mystery should make for one heck of a performance. I'll also be DJing until the cows come home or I pass out. Of course the show and the dance part of the night are 18+. So if you're in Jacksonville, come out and hang out with us. It's fun, it's cheap, we give you whisky at 12am! The fun starts at 10pm.

For those of you that didn't know, if you call the Wallpaper number on the flyer I was passing out last Thursday, the guy from Wallpaper will call you back! Lisa got a phone call from the guy, who apparently has fled California. Watch out Lisa.

Spring Tigers Live at Eclipse Thursday 5/1

We're continuing our streak of great live bands opening up the night. This Thursday, Spring Tigers from Athens are passing through and rough things up a bit.

They remind me of Of Montreal on speed meets XTC or something along those lines. Loads of hand claps, sugary sweet choruses, jerky guitar riffs, and just plain great songs. I couldn't find any tracks for you to download, but I stole this rather twee and funny video from their Myspace page. (the sound is from their live show at SXSW)


Come out Thursday night and support them and if they're not enough, we'll be giving away Portishead stuff all night long. All that for next to nothing and I'll be DJing as well.
