This Is Coco Machete

After nine years, and over 100 releases, New York City’s Coco Machete Records delivers its first eponymous collection with This Is Coco Machete. Far from being a retrospective, This Is Coco Machete places you smack in the middle of the label’s most recent, current club bangers. It’s been out exclusively on Beatport for a couple weeks and is available worldwide this week.

A mix of eclectic vocals and sonic inspirations could have only originated in the streets of New York City but have gone global. Many of the featured artists and remixers on This Is Coco Machete – No. 1 hail from every corner of the globe; Fukkk Offf & Jence of Digitalism come from Hamburg Germany; Oliver Twizt, The Netherlands; Zodiac Cartel & Disco of Doom pop in from the UK; Polymorphic & Noise Invaders rep Moscow; Mikix the Cat, Paris; NROTB & Hatchmatik are from the Great White North  and of course Spencer Product, Entyce & Debra Dolce are the resident natives from NYC. The compilation is simply for people who want to, as the label puts it, shake it all night long!  This is the sound of New York City, this is Coco Machete!

Talk About Good Fortune

Fortune follow the release of their debut album, Staring At The Ice Melt on August 30th with a double A side single on 6th September. The combination of ‘Under The Sun’ and ‘Gimme’ is the perfect calling card for the debut album, showcasing the new takes on dance music being pioneered by the French trio. Between the lugubrious breaks and bleeps of ‘Under The Sun’ and the disco flair of ‘Gimme’ lies the heart of the Fortune project.

Formed by members of the highly rated Abstrakt Keal Agram and Snookut and with Cassius’ Pierrick Devin on production duties, the genesis of Fortune was a desire to put together a band that could draw on the sounds and grooves of their previous work but with the addition of pop song structures and with a definite mission to play the songs live. Consequently, Staring At The Ice Melt draws from the entire palette of dance music from disco to hip hop, house to techno with each track is a fantastic piece of pop music.

The single is released on digital download on 6th September and comes with a host of exclusive remixes from the likes of Grand Marnier and Tepr alongside the return of Jon Kahuna with his first new music in a long time in collaboration with Si Duffy (New Order, Missy Elliot, Leftfield).

Join The Kids At The Bar

Everybody hates Kids at the Bar...I mean come on, they're just an annoyance...they hog the space, they don't spend money, and they just kind of stand around. Then there are these Kids at the Bar. These kids are hyper, jumpy, and simply unable to sit still.

Cranking out tunes faster than Toyota can issue recalls, Kids at the Bar have release about 35 singles in the last year including their latest, Your Body On Me. Taking something that sounds like a commercial indie vocal (think Owl City or something like that), a basketful of beats, and an insatiable desire to level a dance floor and there you have Kids creating on heck of a single. It's a master stroke of simplicity that's been remixed by a whole host of folks including Dirty Disco Youth, Trash Yourself, Jesse Jamz, Crystal Vision and Beatpunks.

The result of all of this is a single that's drenched is sweat, pieced together with chopped up beats and vocals, slathered in dirty and broken synths and glued together with a chorus that's as deadly as Ebola. Excellent stuff then.

For The 2000th Time

No, The 2000 aren't a Y2K error stuck in the past, they're a Italian duo from the Eternal City who simply decided to sacrifice their souls to the Music Gods. Upon completion of this pact, the duo were forced to don white masks because of their inability to physically display emotions by any means other than music. (Really, their musical Deatheaters armed w/two turntables and a Ableton.)

Since they love music and seek to create music that make people go insane, this isn't really an issue. As they tell it, they make tracks that they would want to hear with the hope that those around them will want to hear them as well.

They do a pretty good job of it as they take the best bits of things and super glue them together in an attempt to a) confuse the hell out of your drunken dancing ass b) make you go insane or at least your feet on the middle of the dance floor and c) prove that technology is a wonderful creative thing.

With pounding bass lines, seriously sharp edits, and a sense of what works on your feet, The 2000 do a pretty good job at making their emotions pretty evident.

No Frills From Pitch Twit and Prod

Pitch Twit is the pseudonym of Yorkshire musician and producer Tom Sidebottom. This young producer's music is about melody and energy and when he's not making it, he's issuing it. You see Tom is also co-founder and producer of Exceptional Records.

Prod, meanwhile, dares to challenge the unknown, creating a raw, edgy but freakishly smooth blend of hybridized musical conventions. He takes the musical ethos of his past, and distorts it for the present, putting together an album of astounding jazz-soaked, glitched out neo-soul beats, all tightly wound and interlinked within in his salad day influences of old school jungle, techno and electronica.

Pitch Twit takes one of Prod’s vocals and places it beautifully over a spacious house backing – giving Prod’s soulful voice centre stage. The track’s pace is perfect – everything happens at the right time, and the rolling bass line and spacious chords give the track that ‘I could listen to this all day’ sort of quality. At the same time, the beats are crisp and energetic – giving the track dance floor appeal – maybe an outdoor terrace next to the beach.

Dave Wrangler Wrangles A Few More...

The busiest man in Texas, Dave Wrangler, continues our Day of Dave's here at the POP Stereo with a host of new tracks that he's been working on lately.

The guy is like an assembly line of tuneage and probably never finds time to sleep or eat because if he's not working on music, he's out somewhere DJing either in Houston (his home) or some other city/state/country. The man's schedule is the definition of redonkulous.

Clearly possessing the eternal groove, he manages to balance it all with ease and you can hear that in most of his work. He uses sound palettes from all musical disciplines to create his internationally-acclaimed remixes and it's pretty amazing what he comes up with.

As if to prove a point, in the time it takes you to download the tunes below, my guess is that Dave will already have completed a new track because that's just how efficient this guy is.

Oh My Dear Disco

Ann Arbor, Michigan’s My Dear Disco was handpicked by Todd Edwards to remix his new single I Might Be. Todd Edwards known for his collaboration with Daft Punk (co-produced the track “Face To Face” on Discovery which hit #1 on Billboard’s Club Charts) and remixed of artists such as Justice and Klaxons found the band through hearing their single “White Lies.” After seeing them live, he was hook and sold on the band’s incredible live show and music.

Having also remixed songs “Love Lockdown” by Kanye West and “Ulysses” by Franz Ferdinand, their remixes have been around the dance floor a few times. Their new remix of “I Might Be” doesn’t stray from that direction and completely picks up the pace on Todd Edwards’ smooth new track.

Think of My Dear Disco as a bit Hercules and Love Affair, a bit St. Etienne, a bit Intastella, and a bit Donna Summer. The create huge pop productions that sounds like they belong on FM radio and in huge mega clubs. Not bad for a band from Ann Arbor, Michigan.

Catch them on their massive tour this summer...

Pull No Punches

As you may or may not know, Brooklyn is pretty much the US capital of music right now. So much music is coming out of this area of NY that's it's pretty much impossible to keep up with. The funny thing about Brooklyn though, is much like the area itself, the stuff coming out of there is incredibly diverse. You have all sorts indie, all sorts of dance, world music inflected stuff...it's just all over the place and that's truly a great thing that should help the area remain fertile for at least a while.

Among the heaps of talent crawling around the area is PUNCHES. PUNCHES was formed on a late and snowy night in December 2009 when DJ twins Finger On The Pulse shared a cab with Alan Astor and The Kid Robb. During that cab right the four of them talked about what would make the perfect soundtrack for the upcoming summer and it was at that point that PUNCHES was born.

Having been around for under a year, their rise has been quick. They've already remixed Au Revoir Simone's, "Only You," written a few of their own tunes, and of course put together a mixtape which features all of that and a whole lot more.
With spring here, it seems to make sense to start thinking of the summer and thanks to the PUNCHES mixtape below you can start planning your holiday now because you already have the soundtrack.

Aman Ellis was the Crunkasaurus

After the dismemberment of his successful band The Great Big No! in 2008, Aman Ellis turned to his side project Crunkasaurus Sex. After finding solace with midi controllers, studio monitors, and electronic production, he decided to get out of Alabama and move to the Big Apple. He landed in Brooklyn, NY, and changed his production name to the one he was born with, Aman Ellis. His first official release, All The Things - EP, was issued on February 11, 2010 on Abstract Logic Recordings.

All The Things shows an artist coming into his own and growing out of his Crunkasaurus Sex phase. With a melodic quality that's impressive and the ability to shift gears faster then Michael Schumacher, Aman Ellis is a talent that the world will soon have to reckon with. Whether it's tech house, italo, or glitchy stuff, the guy can write a tune almost as if it was second nature to him. Truly a talent to keep an eye on especially if you live up in good ol' New York.

El Diablo and Sidney Samson Rises Up

What do you get when the two hottest Dutch producers of the moment finally get together in the studio? A monster of a track that levels the dance floor.

Actually, I lied you get two monsters to be precise! Holland's globetrotting Hooligan producer, Don Diablo, teams up with Sidney Samson of 'Riverside' fame to deliver the classic in the making...Monster EP, which consists of two massive weapons of dance floor destruction, "Monster" and "Rise Up".

The Monster EP has already found early bird supporters from every big name on the planet and more than likely every DJ at WMC. The record is literally a monster of a tune and something tells me this is the start of a beautiful friendship...whenever they find the time. Don and Sidney unleash the Monster EP on March 8

Who You Calling A Twit...

Pitch Twit is the pseudonym of Yorkshire musician and producer Tom Sidebottom. This young producer's music is about melody and energy and when he's not making it, he's issuing it. You see Tom is also co-founder and producer of Exceptional Records.

Tom comes from a highly musical family; three of his direct family play or are still playing the violin in professional orchestras (auditions for these generally last between one and two years!) He even plays himself. In fact, you can check out "Knives" by Black Diamond Bay to hear Tom's violin.

Violin aside, synths are obviously Tom's real love though, and the synthesized bleeps and wobbles squeezing out of the speakers is like pure heaven to him. His latest track, "Bulletproof," is evidence of this. Pitch Twit’s knack for electronic dance music and twisting sounds and melody to accentuate his percussive thumps are his signature and one listen to "Bulletproof," and I think you agree that Pitch Twit is far from being like his namesake. In fact, he's anything but.

Causing A SCNDL

Quick post here in between commericals...I'm watching LOST, but there's always time to post a killer tune.

Here is one.

Causing quite a scandal since their return, Manhattan's SCNDL have crept from out of the dark streets to back behind the console with a new release. Entitled, Need To Know the record is reminiscent and inspired by old Chicago House. Seems kind of ironic that I'm posting a track called Need To Know while watching a show that doesn't tell us half of what we need to know.

Anyway, Need To Know comes with a host of remixes from across the Atlantic including the UK's Lee Mortimer, Markus Lange and Stereo Funk, and Fukkk Off as well.

Sounds like a killer package if there ever was one...

Kill Frenzy's Revenge

Kill Frenzy is a young DJ producer from Limburg, Belgium. He got the music bug a few years ago listening to his good friend Jules X deejaying. Young Frenzy worked his way into the production game rather fast and was the very first European juke (booty house) producer to release several booty tracks on the infamous Dust Traxx label (Chicago) and the legendary DJ Godfather's label, Juke Trax online (Detroit). Even techno legend and beat-juggling-expert Dave Clarke is a Kill Frenzy fan, putting some of his early productions in his chart!

Not wanting to limit himself to just one style he started working on producing various styles. HeĘĽs first EP was picked up immediately by Joshua Harvey, better now as: HervĂ© or The Count of Monte Cristal. Harvey signed Kill Frenzy to his well known and well respected Cheaper Thrills label and the “54321” EP came out in the beginning of August 2009.

Kill Frenzy promised us that more tracks were in the works around the same time and he's delivered. He's just served up a new speaker rattling jam that's a dancefloor destroyer, literally. His rework of Pablo Calamari & Velicious', "Think About You," is a noisy and wobbly tune that's the sound of an air raid about to unload on top of you. Loud, fast, and chaotic, the tune will leave many in pain by the time it's done. Good stuff then.

No Rimer or Reason

In 2008 Rimer (now under the name of Rimer London) formed an Electro-pop group called Le Le together with graphic designer/producer Piet Parra and rapper/singer Faberyayo from the popular Dutch band De Jeugd van Tegenwoordig.

Things moved rather quickly from there. They first released the single “La Bouche” shortly after their formation with a quick follow up double A-sided single called “Skinny Jeans” and “Hard” it was an instant hit, both songs found themselves in high rotation on Dutch and Belgium television and radio and the formation took off. From their they released “Breakfast” and then things go interesting with Rimer striking out on his own.

Deeply rooted in Italo and Techno it's obvious Rimer London loves the dancefloor even if he staggers to get there. With a loopy intro and a staggered keyboard, "Go Away," takes a few to get started but once it does, it just melts your face. Lush, spooky, and more importantly good, the tune is an spacey classic. "Intercity," on the other hand is Moroder stuck on a Virgin Train. The tune chugs along with an almost, "I Feel Love," vibe to it that reeks of Italo with a big giant I. It's good stuff then...unless you're stuck on a train.

Drlkt Freddie Gets Busy

With a shared love of music and the same kind of musical vision, Jad Cooper and Van Scott came together in early 2008 in what they thought would be a one off studio session. As it turned out their chemistry was spot on and so instantaneous that they found it difficult to stop working together. As a result, these two NYC-based DJs formed Drlkt Freddie, a production team and live act.

Their diverse sound is pulled from many influences with songs that all have the common denominator to move you. They take glitch, house, some hip hop influences, kidnap Green Velvet throw all that into a blender and come up with something that's as dark as it is dancey and as catchy and it's anthemic. They know how to piece a song together and whether it's a remix or their own material they kill it with reckless abandon.

Furiously working in the studio on original material right now for their debut EP, Drlkt Freddie has offered up a host of tracks to keep us busy until the thing is actually released.

Tasty Disco Biscuits

When the Disco Biscuits formed in Philadelphia in 1995, they introduced a pioneering blend of electronic and jam band elements (crusties eh??). Since then, they’ve steadily cultivated a rabid fan base and have spawned an entire movement. Today the Biscuits are able to sell over a quarter of a million tickets in a year and have founded uber-successful summer music festival, Camp Bisco. But rather than remaining within their comfort zone, the band has forged ahead and introduced new ingredients to the beloved Bisco sound. This Fall, the Biscuits gave a sneak peak of the highly eclectic new material with two EP’s, On Time and Widgets. On February 2nd their latest chapter is fully realized in the form of their new album, Planet Anthem, on Diamond Riggs Records through Warner Music Group's Independent Label Group.

Planet Anthem is the product of three fruitful years of labor, during which the Disco Biscuits absorbed everything from hip hop to pop to indie rock into their sound. The band collaborated for the first time with multiple producers, songwriters, and outside musicians, including Don Cheegro and Dirty Harry (Ludacris, Chris Brown, Beanie Sigel). While the album still bears the signature Bisco sound, it also broadens the group’s palette and contains a mountain of meaty hooks. “You and I” is a pogo-inducing rocker with slightly sinister guitar riffs and a monster, arena-ready chorus. “On Time” is a breezy, electro-flavored anthem that is poised to slip into clubs across the country.

Thrills Delivers

The latest from the Treasure Trove series brings us some booty shakin' goodness...

Thrills (also known as Devlin Gormally) is one of the most exciting producers in bass music today. His genre defying sound has been championed by Electro, Dubstep, and Mashup crowds alike, comparable only to peers such as Drop the Lime, AC Slater, & B.Rich. Thrills exploded onto the dance scene with his “refixes” of seminal club hits by everyone from DZ & 16Bit to Jack Beats & Caspa.

While Thrills has retooled many a track, it would be unfair to pigeonhole him as a remixer. You see, both his original bass heavy Electro and Dubstep tracks have been played by the likes of heavy-hitters such as Rusko, DJ Yoda, Kissy Sellout, Doorly, Detboi, DZ, Mickey Slim, Drop the Lime, Nero, & Le Castlevania which really is never a bad thing. With more originals on the way and a lineup of resotrations in the works Thrills will be bringing it and reworking it alot in 2010.

Don Diablo Knows It's Never Too Late

Here's another one from the Treasure Trove....

Never Too Late is the latest brainchild of Don Diablo , taken from his forthcoming album. The e.p. is set to be released digitally, as a taste maker for the album, at the end of November, right before the release of the official new single and video of Where I belong. The e.p. includes remixes by Jark Prongo, Deepgroove, Mason and others. Grab the original and the Mason remix right here, right now!

As an added bonus...'Too Cool For Amsterdam Bitch' is a cheeky bootleg by Hugo van Dyck based on Don Diablo's 'Too Cool For School', which proved to be quite the DJ weapon during the recent Amsterdam Dance Event, where it spread like wildfire among many of the world's biggest DJs and became one of the festival's biggest tunes.

They're So Sneaky

The latest post from the POP! Stereo Treasure Trove comes to us from Australia.

Arguably one of the biggest bands in Australia this past year has been Sneaky Sound System. Their single ‘I Love It’ had the longest chart run in Oz history, their debut album has gone twice platinum and at one point they had four singles in the Top 40. They played the Antipodean Live Earth concert, supported Robbie Williams, and cleaned up at the Arias, the down-under version of the Brits. Yet Sneaky are not a hard-touring rock band or a manufactured pop act. They’re certainly pop and proud of it, but their background lies in their country’s unbelievable dance scene.

Sneaky Sound System are Sydney trio Miss Connie (Connie Mitchell), Black Angus (Angus McDonald), and MC Double D (Daimon Downey), three very different characters bonded by a riotous sense of fun. Their origins lie in the hugely successful club night Sneaky Sundays, thus they make music imbued with frolicking nightlife energy but also flecked with sing-along radio-friendly 1980s electro-pop.
